Example of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Upgrade

This machine was controlled mostly with push buttons and selector switches. It required an operator with years of experience on this specific machine. It also required a maintenance person with experiencing repairing this specific machine.  Some of its parts were also becoming obsolete after 20+ years of use.

Mechanically, the machine was still sound and producing high quality product, but to keep it running, the owner had to constantly search (Ebay, Google, etc.) for replacement parts that were no longer made.

Today, their machine runs better than ever.

Before The Daley Automation Upgrade

After The Daley Automation Upgrade

We replaced the old control system containing relays pushbuttons and selector switches with a PLC (programable logic controller), an HMI (human-machine interface), and a new servo motor controller.

Making these changes allowed the machine to do several things to improve production. The HMI has two important features: the message bar and the fault bar.

The message bar helps the operator control the machine. It can walk anyone step-by-step through the operation of the machine.

The fault bar is to assist maintenance staff. It can give information on the specific component of the machine that is malfunctioning.

With these improvements, our client saw a 20% increase in productivity for this machine.
